LHC still awaiting results 1 month later

first_imgSuspected Zika cases in LindenA month has passed and still the Linden Hospital Complex (LHC) has not received the results of samples sent for testing, suspected to be the Zika virus in Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice).Head of the region’s Regional Democratic Council (RDC) Health Committee, Dr Gregory Harris, last month disclosed that there were a few suspected cases of the virus in Linden. Dr Harris, who is attached to the LHC, revealed that a few patients who exhibited possible signs of the virus were attended to by health professionals at the medical institution, noting that the samples were sent for testing. He said that two of those cases might test positive, since those patients had shown a full range of symptoms, including the rash, red eyes (conjunctivitis) and muscle and joint pain. Dr Harris had also promised to make the information of the results available to the public once it becomes available. When contacted on Sunday, however, he indicated that he is still awaiting the results. The Health Committee Chairman’s suspicions came at a time when there were mounted calls for fogging to commence in the region, in an effort to prevent the spread of mosquito-borne diseases. As promised by Regional Health Officer Pansy Armstrong, fogging has commenced in sections of Linden. Prior to the fogging exercises, she had also indicated that chemicals, such as larvacide were distributed across the region, to assist residents in dealing with the infestation of mosquito.Earlier in the year, there were eight confirmed cases of the Zika Virus in Guyana and hundreds of suspected cases. The first case was detected in an East Bank Demerara (EBD) woman who had travelled to Berbice, while the second case was confirmed in a teenage boy residing at Eccles, EBD.Later on, the virus was detected in two Cuban doctors who reside in Guyana and another woman – all of whom live along the EBD corridor. There is also a case where a US citizen was infected with the Virus after travelling from Guyana but there was no confirmation if the visitor contracted the disease here.In Guyana, if patients exhibit symptoms similar to those of the Zika Virus, they are first tested for other related infections such as malaria, dengue or chikungunya. If those test results are negative, the blood samples would then be sent overseas for testing for the Zika Virus. In most cases, the test results have come back negative.Effects of ZikaFrench researchers recently discovered that in addition to causing severe birth defects, the Zika Virus can result in a rare neurological ailment in adults and is linked to paralysis-causing myelitis (inflammation in the spinal cord).Myelitis can affect limb movement and cause paralysis by interrupting communication between the spinal cord and the rest of the body.French experts reported that a 15-year-old girl diagnosed on the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe with acute myelitis in January had high levels of Zika in her cerebrospinal fluid, blood and urine.“The presence of Zika virus in the cerebrospinal fluid of our patient with acute myelitis suggests that this virus might be neurotropic” – something that attacks the nervous system,” the researchers noted. Also, there have been less than a handful of reported cases of sexual transmission.last_img read more

PPP to push for international action against GECOM

first_imgThe Opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has said it intends to push for international action against the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) following the vote to inform President David Granger that elections cannot be held in 90 days as constitutionally mandated. The PPP said the time is opportune for international action – as was needed in 1990 to ensure constitutional compliance. The Party is referring to the intervention of former United States (US) President Jimmy Carter which saw the return of free and fair elections in 1992.As was the case then, Guyana is faced with a situation where GECOM is dominated by the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), the Party said in a statement. According to the PPP, this puts the democratic gains that have been made over the past two decades in Guyana at great risk.“We call on all Guyanese, as well as the international community, to condemn the PNCR’s call for “war” and GECOM’s complicity in the violation of our Constitution,” the Party statement read. The Opposition party feels the country is heading into a constitutional crisis based on the actions taken by GECOM and the Government. It said President David Granger will be held solely responsible for this and the attendant negative consequences for the Guyanese people.Only Tuesday, GECOM Chairman, retired Justice James Patterson used his deciding vote and sided with Government Commissioners to pass a motion that new elections could not be held in 90 days as constitutionally mandated. The second issue that was voted on and passed had to do with funding for elections, and the third was for GECOM to return to normalcy. But while this is happening, the international community has been paying close attention to these developments. As such, the US Embassy had written GECOM on behalf of itself and other Western countries including Britain, Canada and the European Union (EU) for a meeting. That meeting, according to one of the Commissioners, is scheduled to take place on Thursday at GECOM. This will mark the second time that these Western countries will be meeting with GECOM, the last meeting was held around January month-end.Representatives from The Cater Center have also met with GECOM, and officials from both Government and the Opposition on the same issues.SubservientThe PPP has said GECOM is subservient to the Constitution of Guyana, not the other way around. The Party is also of the view that the situation at GECOM, with this sort of action, will undoubtedly guarantee that Guyana is pushed towards a constitutional crisis. It said GECOM’s refusal to begin preparations for General and Regional Elections, after the December 21, 2018 vote on the No-confidence Motion, finds it complicit in frustrating the timeline for the constitutionally due elections.Additionally, the PPP pointed out that there has been no effort to make a decision on what obtains in the short-term. There has also been no decision at the level of the Commission on when GECOM will be ready for elections. As it relates to funding, the PPP is of the view that this is the latest hurdle thrown up by the Government-influenced parties at GECOM. The first hurdle introduced was the call for new house-to-house registration – which it said has been exposed as unnecessary at this time.“The People’s Progressive Party maintains that the laws of Guyana are clear on funding for constitutional agencies like GECOM. Act 4 of 2015 – the Fiscal Management and Accountability (Amendment) Act 2015, Section 80B (8) – makes it clear that: “The appropriation of a constitutional agency approved by the National Assembly shall be disbursed as a lump sum by the end of the month, following the month in which the appropriation was approved.”Section 80B (7) of the same act states that: “The annual budget of a constitutional agency approved by the National Assembly shall not be altered without prior approval of the National Assembly.” This section clearly prohibits the Finance Minister from altering the appropriation to GECOM, as he is empowered to do with the appropriations of non-constitutional agencies, but does not prevent GECOM from utilising the “lump sum” as it sees fit to carry out its functions.last_img read more

Chelsea’s Kante ruled out for three weeks

first_img“Kante is going to do another scan next week to check if his situation is improving. From the previous scan, maybe he will be out for around 20 or 21 days,” Conte told reporters on Friday.Kante, who won the PFA Player of the Year award last season, will miss Chelsea’s Premier League trip to Crystal Palace on Saturday and could be out for another five fixtures this month. That would include two Champions League dates with Roma, Premier League matches against Watford and Bournemouth and a League Cup tie against Everton.Conte admitted Kante’s absence is a big blow as Chelsea head into a busy period, especially as England midfielder Danny Drinkwater, signed from Leicester City in August, is also injured at present.“In Kante’s situation you have to have another scan to understand the situation very well,” Conte said.“He is a big loss for us because we know very well the importance of Kante to our team and we don’t have another player with his characteristics.“Danny is progressing well but is not ready yet. We must have patience with his calf problem. We may have to adapt some defenders into midfielders.”Fourth-placed Chelsea are six points behind Manchester City after the champions lost 1-0 to the Premier League leaders in their last match before the international break.Adding to Conte’s injury woes, Spain striker Alvaro Morata will miss the Palace match with a hamstring injury suffered against City.Morata didn’t play for Spain over the last fortnight, but Conte hopes he will return to face Roma at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.“I hope to have Morata back very soon, I hope for the next game,” Conte said.Meanwhile, Conte has distanced himself from an interview given in Italy late last month in which his Chelsea future was placed in doubt.Conte was unhappy during the close-season after Chelsea failed to land his top transfer targets and sanctioned the sale of Nemanja Matic to title rivals Manchester United. The Italian eventually signed a new contract but it did not include an extension, sparking talk that the former Juventus boss would consider returning to Serie A if he got the right offer.“I only said that one day in the future I’d like to go back to Italy. One day in the future, but I know very well my position,” Conte said.“I have two years on my contract with Chelsea left to go and I’m happy to work for this club, with my players and I like to work with my players.”0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today) 0Shares0000France coach Didier Deschamps (C) consoles defender N’golo Kante after he was substituted with an injury during the World Cup 2018 qualifying match against Bulgaria at The Vasil Levski Stadium in Sofia on October 7, 2017 © AFP/File / Nikolay DOYCHINOVLondon, United Kingdom, Oct 13 – Chelsea manager Antonio Conte says that France midfielder N’Golo Kante will be sidelined for three weeks after suffering a hamstring injury on international duty.Kante was forced off in the first half of France’s World Cup qualifier against Bulgaria last weekend and Conte expects him to be out for the rest of October.last_img read more

Kenya departs Friday for French boot camp

first_imgMigne, who conducted his near full house training on Tuesday at the Moi International Sports Center Kasarani, said the squad he handpicked for the tournament, would benefit from the change in scenery and intensity of the regimen in Marcoussis, France’s national rugby training facility just outside Paris. His selection early May of the 30-man preliminary squad for the Cup — an Africa-wide tournament held every two years — attracted considerable attention from Kenyan football pundits and fans, not all of it positive.Harambee Stars head Coach Sebastien Migne issuing instructions during training. RAYMOND MAKHAYAThe head coach said it was “difficult to stay in the country” and focus with these distractions weighing on his players.“There were a lot of comments at that time, and we need some peace and quiet to prepare for this competition,” Migne told AFP after a training session in Nairobi ahead of their departure for France.“And the weather was very important to me. During this preparation, we will have many sessions, sometimes three times a day and you can’t do that in a hot country. The 46-year-old Migne added he was “really proud” to bring the team to his home turf for preparation.– No looking back –Harambee Stars midfielder Johanna Omollo dribbles past team-mate David Owino during training. Louis van Gaal dismisses poor Man United performance and insists only victory matters

first_imgManchester United manager Louis van Gaal has dismissed complaints about his side’s performance against Aston Villa and insisted only victory matters. The Red Devils have now won their first two Premier League games for the first time in four years after defeating Tottenham and the Villans.A shaky performance against Tim Sherwood’s men on Friday night, though, left some questioning summer signings and their squad depth. But Van Gaal reiterated that early on in the campaign it is only the points that matter not the way the team plays.“I’m satisfied because you can’t get any more than six points. I’m very happy,” he told talkSPORT.“The performances still need a few more matches [to come together] because we’ve only had five weeks of preparations but some players have only had two weeks. You cannot expect us to be at our best straight away.“I’m very sorry to say that but other teams have this problem as well. I have said to my players the most important thing is the win and we have won.”last_img read more

first_imgDONEGAL members of The Cleft Lip & Palate Association of Ireland are warning parents of children affected by Cleft to be prepared for the release of the Disney film ‘Lone Ranger’.Disney describes the villain of the movie whose facial scar is recognisable as resulting from Cleft Lip as “a ruthless outlaw whose terribly scarred face is a perfect reflection of the bottomless pit that passes for his soul.”Lego has brought out a range of toys to accompany the movie and includes the character complete with cleft lip. According to Georgina Wade, Chair of CLAPAI: “The issue is not that a movie character has a cleft lip or that Lego have duplicated the cleft. The issue is the deliberate negative association of a cleft. The ideology and wording are extremely offensive to people living with cleft and their family and friends.“There is no doubt that this is what the movie sets out to do. William Fichner the actor who plays the villain says when asked about acting under the make up: ‘You know, I have the prosthetic broken nose, the whole cleft lip …’“This association of a cleft lip with evil may lead to bullying, mocking and an expectation that children with a cleft should be the bad guys in playground games. These children are already vulnerable due to their facial condition. They encounter enough medical and psychological challenges in everyday life without this” said Georgina Wade.Cleft is one of the commonest congenital facial conditions worldwide. In Ireland there are 100 to 120 babies born with a cleft annually. Therefore this affects a sizable number of people in Ireland. This unnecessary portrayal implants an incorrect psychological connection between cleft and evil. As this film is rated 12a it will undoubtedly leave a negative impression on young minds. A statement from CLAPAI said: “We are advising parents to be ready for questions from their children and to prepare their children for potentially difficult situations when at play. We also want to pre-warn teenagers and adults about the content of the movie so that they may choose to avoid it.“The association of evil with a facial birth defect has already caused great upset abroad among people who have seen the movie as well in Ireland where people have seen the pictures and the merchandise. It is particularly difficult because Disney and Lego are in the heart of children’s childhoods and are trusted ‘friends’ to families.” We do not live in Disney’s fantasy world. This is causing real hurt to real people.” DONEGAL PARENTS ANGRY AT DISNEY MOVIE was last modified: August 17th, 2013 by John2Share this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:DONEGAL PARENTS ANGRY AT DISNEY MOVIElast_img read more
