first_img AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email TORONTO — “Rose,” an original show from Toronto’s Soulpepper Theatre Company, edged out Broadway imports such as “Next to Normal” and “Dear Evan Hansen” to nab the most nominations for a musical at this year’s Dora Mavor Moore Awards.Soulpepper is up for a total of 25 nominations as the leading contender in both the general theatre and musical categories heading into the awards show and ceremony, which recognize excellence in Toronto theatre, dance and opera.“Rose,” a new production inspired by Gertrude Stein’s “The World is Round,” racked up 11 nominations, including best production; best new musical for playwright Sarah Wilson and composer Mike Ross; best direction for Gregory Prest; and acting nods for lead Hailey Gillis and featured players Peter Fernandes and Sabryn Rock.Trailing behind in the musical category is The Musical Stage Company’s “Next to Normal” with 10 nominations, while Mirvish Productions’ “Dear Evan Hansen” and Young People’s Theatre’s “Mary Poppins” both earned nine. Newcomer Eclipse Theatre Company also racked up six musical nominations for its debut production of “Kiss of the Spider Woman.”In general theatre, Soulpepper racked up a total of 14 nods over five productions, including seven for the Canadian premiere of “The Royale,” based on the true story of African-American boxer Jack Johnson’s fight to become the heavyweight world champion amid early 20th-century racial segregation.The Canadian Opera Company scored 33 nominations, a higher total than any other contender, including best production nods for “Otello,” “Eugene Onegin,” “La Boheme” and “Hadrian.”In the independent theatre division, Coal Mine Theatre leads with 10 nominations, five of them for “The Nether,” a co-production with Studio 180 Theatre.Saga Collectif and Human Cargo both garnered seven nominations, and Native Earth Performing Arts earned six.The winners will be announced on June 25 at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts.The Canadian Press by The Canadian Press Posted May 28, 2019 8:38 am PDTcenter_img Soulpepper’s original musical ‘Rose’ racks up 11 Dora nominationslast_img read more
