Your Name Director Makoto Shinkai Has Asteroid Named After Him

first_imgLet us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey. Stay on target Director Makoto Shinkai, of Your Name fame, has had a ridiculous amount of success over his career thus far, including a massively popular few films that anime fans won’t soon forget. Now, the 45-year-old director can add another incredible item to his resume that most folks don’t have a chance of seeing on their CV: having an asteroid named after him. No, not a fake one or one seen in a movie like Your Name, but a real-life asteroid. That’s an intergalactic achievement unlike no other! The asteroid is named “55222 Makotoshinkai”, in a tribute to both Shinkai as well as his touching film, which finds two lovers crossed by time and space tied to a tragic event that threatens to tear them apart forever. The asteroid was originally discovered back in 2001 by astronomer Roy A. Tucker at the Goodricke-Piggott Observatory in Arizona.I am pleased to announce that asteroid 2001 RP63 has been numbered and named (55222) Makotoshinkai. Makoto Shinkai, born as Makoto Niitsu (b. 1973) is a Japanese author. His anime credits include “Your Name”, “5 Centimeters Per Second”, and “The Garden of Words”.— Roy A. Tucker (@gpobserver) April 2, 2018Tucker’s proposed name was only approved recently by the International Astronomical Union, and he tweeted out how pleased he was at the development, as any true anime fan would. Tucker is a Japanese culture and anime fan, and has submitted other proposed names for other asteroids he’s discovered. As far as this one, it’s 7.25 kilometers in diameter, and it’s in the main asteroid belt that can be found between Mars and Jupiter. It’s always so cool when tech and anime collide like this, and when it comes to naming things after creators, it looks like Tucker has us all beat. Now how do I go about discovering a new asteroid that I can name after Hideo Kojima?center_img ‘Cannon Busters’ Is The Black Anime We’ve Been Waiting…Casio G-SHOCK Unveils ‘Akira’-Inspired ‘Neo Tokyo̵… last_img read more
